Filter With Local H

Richard Patrick’s career is a vision of multifaceted creativity, cultivated throughout his 30+ years of producing music professionally through his band Filter, various collaborations, side projects, supergroups, film scoring, and soundtrack work.

Patrick’s initial foray into the public eye was as Nine Inch Nails’ first touring guitarist. Patrick met NIN founder Trent Reznor in the late ’80s at a music store in Cleveland. The two became close friends and eventually bandmates. Patrick played with the band from 1989–1993, appearing in numerous music videos, including “Down in It,” “Head Like a Hole,” “Wish,” and “Gave Up.”

Filter was formed in Cleveland, OH, in 1993 when Patrick left Nine Inch Nails.

Filter’s debut album, Short Bus, was released in 1995 and went platinum, largely due to the success of its first single, “Hey Man Nice Shot.” The follow-up, 1999’s Title of Record, also went platinum, driven by the crossover success of the song “Take a Picture.”

Filter’s third album, The Amalgamut, was released in 2002, spawning such classic songs as “Where Do We Go from Here” and “American Cliché.”

In 2006, the Army of Anyone project, a supergroup led by Patrick with Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Luzier of Korn, came to light. The group released one album and embarked on a tour before its members returned to their respective bands.

Patrick refocused on Filter, releasing Anthems for the Damned in 2008, The Trouble with Angels in 2010, The Sun Comes Out Tonight in 2013, and Crazy Eyes in 2016, followed by two singles in 2020. Now more than 20 years into Filter’s career, Patrick is more prolific than ever.

Celebrating 30 years of Filter, 2023 saw the much-anticipated release of a new Filter album, The Algorithm. Singles “Face Down,” “For the Beaten,” and “Obliteration” featured innovative music videos that garnered attention from both new and longtime fans.

Additionally, Patrick has entered the world of film scoring. Most notably, he composed music for a documentary that went on to earn an Emmy Award, underscoring his versatility beyond the rock world. The Emmy win highlights Patrick’s ability to craft emotionally resonant compositions that elevate diverse storytelling mediums.

In August 2025, Filter released The Algorithm: Ultra Edition, a new take on the band’s previous release, remixed and remastered with nine additional tracks. Ultra Edition features four remixes of previously released tracks, including versions by former Nine Inch Nails member Charlie Clouser, producer/mixer Sean Beaven (NIN, Marilyn Manson), and Richard Patrick’s own take on “Obliteration,” as well as Julian Gray’s version of “Burn Out the Sun.” The release also includes two covers: Filter’s take on U2’s “A Sort of Homecoming” and Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy.”

Filter hits the ground running in 2026, with tour dates beginning in March and running through October, and a new album expected before the end of the year.
